A BUILD-UP TO VIOLENCE IN VEGAS
In January 2014, the new home of the Millers became Sin City itself: Las Vegas. The Millers found an apartment located on Bruce Street at the Oak Tree Apartments. It wasn't long at all before the pair became the talk of the neighbors. Mostly, this was because of their liking of dressing up as superheroes and supervillains and parading around the apartments in their fantasy gear. Amanda had a thing for Harley Quinn, a super-villainess created by DC Comics back in 1992. For Jerad it was primarily the Slenderman and the Joker from the Batman comic books. (Both Batman and the Joker are the creations of DC Comics, too.) There was, however, something else: Jerad Miller didn't just dress like the Slenderman, he was also deeply interested in the whole Slenderman phenomenon. Yes, the macabre monster of the Internet had got its tentacles into yet another soul.
Neighbors occasionally saw the pair hitting the town on weekend nights with Amanda dressed in her red Harley garb and accompanying Harley pigtails, and Jerad in full-on Slenderman splendor. He had the black suit, the white shirt, the skinny black tie, and a pale, blank mask that displayed just two eye-holes and a slit for a mouth. One neighbor remarked that Jerad had once told him the pair had been asked to leave a local Vegas strip-club for being inappropriately dressed, which is kind of ironic, to say the very least. They had a swinging private life and occasionally held costume parties, at which everyone was expected to dress for the occasions (which included coming as the Slenderman, so to speak). Of course, there's nothing at all wrong with having a bit (or even a lot) of fun on a weekend night or two. For the Millers, however, what was perceived by some of their neighbors as just a bit of alternative behavior would eventually mutate into something just about as dark as dark could be.
Although the cosplay (with weekend benefits...) continued at a steady pace, a change began to slowly develop in Jerad Miller. It was far from being a positive change; it oozed negativity. That change involved Miller not exactly giving up his supervillain costumes, but adding to them. The primary addition collectively amounted to a collection of military-style camouflage-type clothing, gloves, and black combat boots. A good sign, this most certainly was not. Miller then chose to up the ante to just about the highest level possible when he started posting anti-police comments, rants, and links on multiple forms of social media, usually when he was dressed up as the Joker, complete with the character's famous iconic make-up. Miller also had nothing good to say about the ever-increasing state of surveillance that we now live in. His fury and frustration at the world around him, and particularly at elements of the U.S. government, were growing as quickly as his mind was seething and whirling. He encouraged nation-wide revolution and, incredibly and outrageously, was of the opinion that the victims of the 1999 Columbine High School killings in Colorado got what they deserved.
